Sewing: From Onesie to Dress!

So I’ve had some lovely blue flamingo fabric laying round for ages, without a purpose, so I decided to have my first attempt at baby clothing! I found a brilliant tutorial which seemed really easy to follow, which would use just one piece of fabric, and a onesie!

Although this seems SUPER SIMPLE, I hadn’t actually done anything on my sewing machine since before Holly was born (almost 9months ago!) so needless to say I was a bit rusty and made a few mistakes!

I followed the original tutorial to the letter, however in future I would definitely make a few adjustments to some of the steps, particularly in respect to the width of the skirt, as no matter how hard I tried the gather wasn’t quite right! The original blog also recommended only pinning the skirt to the onesie in four places. Although I can see this would make it easier to run through the machine, it did lead to a slightly wobbly skirt on the first attempt, and a very painful half an hour of unpicking stitching!

But, below are a few snaps of my attempt! I definitely need to spend a bit more time with my sewing machine to improve on my technique, but for now I’m quite happy with the results! I will be making some slight adjustments to the original tutorial and re-attempting this project in the future, so I’ll let you know how I get on!

If you want to give this quick little DIY dress a try you can find the original tutorial here:

I will be re-attempting this project and updating you all on the adjustments I made to the original tutorial. So if you want something a little bit neater, keep your eyes peeled and I will see what I can do!

If you give this project a try, please drop me an e-mail and show us how you got on! All details can be found on the contact page
